I first discovered the Death Metal band Corpse by way of the advertisement in HM Magazine for their album From The Grave back in 1997. I eventually listened to that album a couple of years later, and…didn’t think much of it at the time. I might have to give it another listen here in the near future, maybe. Give it a reassessment. But, I digress.

Unbeknownst to me, they had remained active, and continued to release demos and this particular EP, Among The Dead, in 2013. Originally released independently on CD, this was reissued through Martyrdom Records that same year on 2 CDr’s, the second disc featuring selected cuts from various demos, titled The Early Years. Fortunately, those were included on the SkyBurnsBlack digital reissue in 2015.

My copy is, in fact, the SkyBurnsBlack Records edition, which includes The Early Years tracks. Maybe one day, I’ll review that one separately, but for now this review is going to focus on the Among The Dead EP itself. Let’s dive into it.

  • “Intro” Instrumental; grinding, heavy and very brief…
  • “King Of Tyre” Pretty good rhythm groove to open, then kicks right into the riff, which also has a good groove to it; driving, heavy, gets the head banging along; good bass run, could be a bit tighter, but decent for the most part…
  • “Among The Dead” Chaotic blast of ze Death Metalz; good shredding solos, unrelenting and sweaty…
  • “Chilling Fear” Dark and doomy opening, before blasting away with another chaotic Death Metal groove; gets the head banging along, with a shredding solo that absolutely rips
  • “Open Mind, Straight To Hell” I really like the riff on this one; nice chunky and heavy hook, gets the head moving along; bit of funk groove thrown in for flavor; solo evokes Jimi Hendrix…

Overall: Among The Dead is a pretty good Death Metal EP, something that should have garnered more attention than it did. It’s a good thing that this is available on Bandcamp for purchase. It’s raw, yes, but it doesn’t deter from the experience whatsoever.
