CORAM DEO
Evangelion
Independent
2007

Coram Deo is–or was, at least, depending on whether you’re looking at the Metal-Archives or Spirit Of Metal site–a Melodic Death Metal band from Ukraine. Formed in 2003, and (according to the Metal-Archives) split in 2010, they released two full-lengths during their time.

Евангелион was released in 2007 independently. Then, it was re-released by Sullen Records in 2008 under the English title Evangelion limited to 250 CDs. My own copy was a download from the Open Grave Records/Sullen site before they went belly-up. Let’s go ahead and give this a listen.

  • “Evangelion” Nearly 4-minute instrumental; synths, ocean waves breaking, then some spooky spoken word, leads into…
  • “Encomastic Song” Good melodic yet brutal mid-paced blackened melodic death metal; atmospheric with some great riff hooks…
  • “Daylight” Dark, Gothic Cradle Of Filth style metal; majestic and atmospheric, bit of a galloping riff going…
  • “Fall Of Babylon” Solemn opening, then hits with some Invisible Oranges style riff and rhythms, leading into a galloping, driving banger…
  • “Be Bless” Ethereal choral hitting with a massive power metal riff that bleeds into a slower mid-paced riff; blastbeats and face melting riffs and chilling shriek vocals…
  • “Hands Of Father” Invisible Oranges power riffs, majestic face-blasting dark melodic death metal cut; doomy pace at times; then goes full-on blistering blastbeats and buzzsaw; multi-layered song…
  • “Come” Good driving metal riff; blastbeats and synth ambient lends to an epic 8 minute penultimate track…
  • “On The Way” Piano keys, strings, orchestral instrumental with spoken work, brief at 90 seconds…

Overall: Evangelion is a pretty good collection of Blackened Melodic Death Metal, really. Hits all the sweet spots, while maintaining a level of musicianship that shows in the production. Very much worth checking out.
